Great theatre makers, Thomas Ostermeier (photo left) and Luk Perceval (photo right), first presented to Romanian audiences at the National Theatre Festival in Bucharest, along with the Letonian director Alvis Hermanis, will receive on Saturday, June 18th, stars on the Celebrities Alley in Sibius  Cetăţii Park, during the 2016 edition of the International Theatre Festival.

The National Theatre Festival gladly salutes this event even more since these remarkable personalities of European theatre had a great impact on the audiences of the Bucharest festival, during the past years.

In 2007, NTF’s artistic director, Marina Constantinescu, invited two memorable productions of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin,/Nora” by Henrik Ibsen and Wunschkonzert” by Franz Xaver Kroetz, both directed by Thomas Ostermeier. Thomas Ostermeier and his wonderful ensemble participated at the NFT following their flamboyant success in Avignon, where Ostermeier had acted as associate artistic director of that edition of the festival, one of an extremely high cultural and theatrical level. He had conquered theatre lovers, audiences avid for this art. Thomas Ostermeier has returned to Romania ever since, with other productions of his, to Craiova and Cluj. HisHamlet”, presented at the International Shakespeare Festival in 2010 remains, along with Nora”, an unforgettable performance.

In 2008, Alvis Hermanis, a reputed director from Letonia was invited to the 18th edition of the NTF- curated by the artistic director Cristina Modreanu- for a public conference and a presentation of his refined production ”The Sound of Silence. A concert of Simon & Garfunkel 1968 in Riga that Never Took Place” (spielzeit’ Europa/Berliner Festspiele, Germania and New Theatre Riga, Letonia).

In 2015, Belgian director Luk Perceval was the special guest of the National Theatre Festival. For the previous NTF edition, Marina Constantinescu chose the impressive production Front”, staged by Perceval at the Thalia Theatre Hamburg, Germany. Premiered in 2014, this performance put its mark on the European theatre through its perceptive approach of one of the key topics of the contemporary world: war and its effects on the human being. During his stay in Bucharest, Luk Perceval conducted a workshop for ten young Romanian actors,”Peace for the monkey mind” / ”A perfectly calm and concentrated mind”, an intense artistic experience, a harmonius combination of yoga techniques and text study on pieces by William Shakespeare and Jon Fosse.

We are also delighted that a great director like Daniele Finzi Pasca is again present in Romania. His first participation, during the 2014 edition of the National Theatre Festival, with his magnificent production of ”Donka / a Letter to Chekhov”, co- produced by Compagnia Finzi Pasca (Switzerland) and The International Chekhov Festival (Moscow). It is a great joy to see that such a wide scope theatremaker returns to Romania, this time in Sibiu, with his production of the "Bianco su Bianco".

The National Theatre Festival promotes and supports the values of Romanian Theatre. Through its international component, it aims at bringing remarkable personalities of world theatre to the attention of Romanian audiences: Lev Dodin, Patrice Chereau, Josef Nadj, Vera Mantero, Jean-Guy Lecat, Tamas Ascher, Sylvain Groud, Simon Toal, Jan Lauwers, Hans Thies Lehmann, Richard Foreman, Jöel Pommerat, Kama Ginkas, Jean-Luc Lagarce, Rober Schechner, Michal Kobialka, Lee Breuer, Matthias Langhoff, Romeo Castellucci, Rodrigo Garcia, Krzysztof Warlikowski...

This means to circulate of values and ideas, this means initiating fascinating encounters with theatre in a Europe for which only arts and culture can, if ever, bring redemption.
