During the 29th edition of the National Theatre Festival, the foyer and the lounge of the Studio Hall of the Odeon Theatre will host an exhibition about the art and life of a complex and visionary artist, an initiative playing on the deliberately fragmentary information fused with melancholy and decadence…

Curator: Dragoș Galgoțiu

“Forty years will have passed this year since my first performance, Camus’ “Misunderstanding” on the stage of the Theatre of Sibiu, in 1979. Because such a long time has lapsed, because I lived so vividly the enthusiasm and illusion of my theatrical experience with my friends, because I have seen and witnessed theatre for even longer (my mother used to be an actress of the National Theatre in Cluj), because beyond theatre there were other arts which had enticed me and which I practiced (I started carving stone when I was 11 years old, in George Apostu’s workshop), the opportunity of taking a glance at my life experience is inescapably filled with melancholy…

Hence searching for images, remembering people who had joined me into my conception, trying to eventually understand what I did and who I am, I can see beyond the bounds of the images, I can see the invisible, the grace and the ridicule of my artistic adventure as if it were a performance, a frail play filled with my own fervour and the fervour of those who joined me into my conception. (Dragoș Galgoțiu)

Creased handwritten prints, passe-partout framed photographs festooned with a moment’s note, milestones of an artistic route besides my mentors and friends: Vlad Mugur, Aureliu Manea, Cătălina Buzoianu, Andrei Both, Vittorio Holtier, Lia Manțoc, Doina Levintza… Frame photographs, background blueprints, a Biedermeier wardrobe with its doors open, hosting objects belonging to the artist – a universe which reminds of the wardrobe in The Cherry Orchard. The images, the objects, the emotions – they all wither, just like video screenings or the montage of stage music and fractured, jammed sounds – they are all subject to the sand invasion…

“I should probably add something about the sand in which the objects are set, the real sand in the exhibition, and also about the fact that everything is sand: the images, the shows, the memories, our frail existence and the memory of imaginative adventures, the theatre experience itself is sand, the thoughts and the images are sand. It is an exhibition about sand…”  (Dragoș Galgoțiu)
