Cristian Pepino’s drawings are vivid; they breathe freedom, authenticity and a kind of personal independence. Whether they are in charcoal, pencil, pastel, or fluid, real or the fruit of the imagination, dynamic or static, painstakingly worked or just from a few brushes, black-and-white or in coloured greys – his works introduce us to an ingenious, original world, into a parallel universe where there are no limits, where everything is possible, where the light softly strokes the contours. It is a way to confess the complexity that surrounds us – the visible and especially the invisible one. This is because one of the great merits of the artist is that he makes the invisible become visible, come to life and lie comfortably on the sheet of paper.

Sometimes mysterious, sometimes introspective, sometimes documentary-like or critical, his drawings reveal a creative personality with an undeniable talent. The artist also makes inanimate corners come alive, avoids any mannerism and artificiality and has the great gift to not disturb. There is no place for depression or ending; on the contrary, there is life, joy, and playfulness. His drawings reveal an equally paradoxical, ambiguous and authentic world, which you cannot judge, cancel or reject, in which you simply enter, marvel and admire. Everything exists inside it, there is room for everyone, and there is generosity. In this world, the impossible becomes possible and the natural stylishly hybridizes with the fantastic. It is as if you were eyeing on something, on a strange place, like a cutting from a story that has its own existence and that will continue to exist even after the viewer moves his gaze away.

Utopian cities, churches and houses from Dobruja region or from Bucharest slums, portraits, static or moving characters that descend, climb, flee, elongated shadows on cracked walls, expressive eyes, pointed outwards, eyes filled with curiosity and whispering lips or marvelling at a smile, poster sketches, collages, wings, aboulic or lonely silhouettes, textures, scales, masks, claws, waves, thin fingers, breasts, hair tresses falling on shoulders – everything is built and articulated in a logic of kindness, love of life, timelessness, of respect for form and light. Cristian Pepino opens a door to something beyond – in space, in time or in reality – which is impossible not to believe in. (Simona Preda)
