Oedipus

October 27th | 18:00 – Bulandra Theatre, Toma Caragiu Hall

As seen by the director Andrei Șerban, inspired by Icke’s adaptation, Oedipus is a power-hungry politician waiting for the election results – decisive not only for his career and family life, but also for the state of the whole nation whose faith lies in this crucial voting. However, due to family drama, press scandals and falling masks, the pressure is growing and more emotions keep building up.

Andrei Şerban returns to Bulandra with the thrilling performance Oedipus, a contemporary staging in which ancient myths turn into breaking news. Sophocle’s tragedy is boldly reinterpreted by multi-award winning British director and playwright Robert Icke into a fresh and modern version that retains the original’s essential themes: self-acknowledgement, truth, guilt, destiny, free will and the arrogance of thinking we know everything and of promising what we can’t vouch for. All of these are brought into the context of the people of today who think they are the new gods of the 21st century. The biggest enigma to be solved remains a millennia old one: Are we born innocent or guilty? Who are we, really? To what extent do we understand and accept our destiny? But above all, this Oedipus is a great yet impossible love story.
