Performing Austria & Romania, the dialogue of performing arts from the two countries

The two instrumental prodigies had a little-known relationship with Romania – Arnold Rosé was born in Iasi in 1863, before his family moved to Vienna; the Rosé Quartet also played frequently with George Enescu in the 1920s. The careers of the two Rosé violinists, like those of many other musicians, came to an abrupt end in 1938 when Austria was annexed by the Nazi Reich. Over 66,000 Austrian Jews fell victim to the Holocaust.

Alma Rosé created and conducted the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp women’s orchestra. In doing so, she saved the lives of many Jewish musicians before she herself died in the camp in 1944. Her father, Arnold Rosé, died a few years later in exile in London. But the violins of the two musicians carry their story forward. To this day, renowned violinists are bringing Arnold Rosé’s Stradivarius and Alma Rosé’s Guadagnini violins to the world’s most prestigious concert halls.

Brought to you by the Haus der Geschichte Österreich (Museum of Austrian Recent History) and the Austrian Cultural Forum, the exhibition “Only violins left – Alma und Arnold Rosé” is presented in a scenographic setting supervised by Adrian Damian, on the occasion of the Bucharest Biennale of Scenography.
