Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990) was one of the most important Polish artists, with a key contribution to the theatre revolution both in Poland and worldwide, as well as a remarkable avant-garde activity in the field of fine arts.

For the first time in Romania, this exhibition will highlight the versatility and complexity of the artist by presenting the main directions he approached as a director, scenographer, actor in his own plays, author of happenings, painter and theorist.

There will be displayed 25 paintings, assemblages, sculptures and sculptural sets for plays from the MOCAK collection and 57 photographs taken between 1980-1990 documenting his plays, including photographic portraits, offering a broad perspective on this fascinating creator.

At the same time as the exhibition, there will be connected events co-organised by Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor CRICOTEKA.

Schedule:

  • October 21st-25th: workshop titled “The costume as instrument in Tadeusz Kantor’s theatre”, held by Bogdan Renczyński, actor of Cricot Theatre 2.
  • February 2025: inside the exhibition space, an artistic installation called “Personal Space” will be opened to the public, using as background a projected slideshow of photographs showcasing the costumes made for Kantor’s theatre.
  • Meetings and workshops held by Justyna Droń, theatrical pedagogue and creator of the educational program of the Cricoteka Centre (participants will have the opportunity to individually relate to Tadeusz Kantor’s costumes, dye fabrics, make collages, apply insignia and print drawings).
  • October 25th 2024, November 22nd 2024, December 13th 2024, January 17th 2025 and February 21st 2025: screenings at MNAR of the cult plays made by Kantor, from „Dead class” (1976) to „Today is not my birthday” (1991). Each screening will be followed by the biographic film „Tadeusz Kantor” (16 min.), directed by Andrzej Sapija. The films will be screened with subtitles in Romanian. Having a ticket at the exhibition „Tadeusz Kantor – artist anywhere, anytime” will only guarantee you a free entry to a limited number of screenings.

The Cultural Season Poland-Romania 2024-2025 is organised by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, with the support of the Polish Institute in Bucharest, the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Romanian Cultural Institute. During the Cultural Season there will be dozens of exhibition, musical, theatrical, cinematographic and literary events.

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is a national cultural institution established in 2000. The objective of the Institute – to create a lasting interest in Polish culture around the world – is realised through collaboration with foreign partners and international cultural exchange in dialogue with the public, in line with the objectives of Poland’s foreign policy. By 2023, the Institute has brought its projects to more than 70 countries on 6 continents, including the UK, France, Israel, Germany, Germany, Turkey, USA, Canada, Australia, Australia, Morocco, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, as well as in China, Japan and Korea. The quality of the projects implemented by the Institute is confirmed by the awards and distinctions obtained at international exhibitions and festivals. In 2023, the Polish Pavilion “Poetics of Necessity”, organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, was a medalist at the London Design Biennale.
