The last days of Elena and Nicolae Ceaușescu

October 21st | 17:00 & 21:00 – I.L.Caragiale National Theatre Bucharest, Atelier Hall

Our ideas about war and the philosophical discourses of the second half of the 20th century have lost meaning. Francis Fukuyama’s famous concept proclaiming the end of history today sounds like history’s giggle.

Performance presented within the Poland-Romania Cultural Season 2024-2025

The Poland-Romania Cultural Season 2024-2025 is organised by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritageand the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, with the support of the Polish Institute in Bucharest, the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Romanian Cultural Institute. There will be dozens of events during the season, including exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and literary events.

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is a national cultural institution established in 2000. The objective of the Institute – to create a lasting interest in Polish culture around the world – is achieved by collaborating with foreign partners and conducting international cultural exchanges in conversation with the public, in line with the objectives of Poland’s foreign policy. By 2023, the Institute has completed projects in more than 70 countries on 6 continents, including the UK, France, Israel, Germany, Germany, Turkey, USA, Canada, Australia, Australia, Morocco, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, as well as in China, Japan and Korea. The quality of the projects implemented by the Institute is confirmed by the awards and distinctions obtained at international exhibitions and festivals. In 2023, the Polish Pavilion “Poetics of Necessity”, organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, was a medalist at the London Design Biennale.

In December 1989, Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena saw what was happening on the streets and how the demonstrators were reacting to the sight of them. Still, they did not allow themselves to think that the public was turning against them. According to both of them, their situation resulted from a betrayal. Until the very last moment, Ceauşescu rejected the accusation that they had driven the country into hunger and misery; instead, pointing to the successes they had achieved. The performance’s creators are also interested in the fate and behavior of those who accompanied the couple in their final hours.
