General audience
Molière draws inspiration from Plautus’ ancient comedy Aulularia (The Pot of Gold), keeping only its central theme — the obsession with money. The Miser established a new dramatic type: the Harpagon, named after its main character — an old man consumed by boundless stinginess, ridiculous behavior, and unimaginable selfishness. All these make him rather comical than despicable.
