Alex Kerner is a young man dealing with an unusual challenge. His mother, a devoted believer in the East German socialist system, falls into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she wakes up months later, everything has changed — the country, the regime, the entire world she once knew. Fearing that the shock could harm her fragile health, Alex goes to great lengths to maintain the illusion that nothing has changed. He recreates life in the former GDR within the walls of their apartment, producing fake news programs and staging everyday routines to keep the truth hidden.
Goodbye, Lenin! is a bittersweet story about the end of a regime, the power of love, and the ways in which political upheaval shapes personal lives.
