How do you feel, Iulia Colan, to be selected for the National Theatre Festival with this one- woman show? What does this mean to you? And to the performance?

It means a great joy.Not because I’m alone on stage, but because I did this all by myself, except for the musical choices, it’s all my work. I’m happy that the show was not overlooked and I am grateful to Mrs. Marina Constantinescu, who has supported my performance from the very beginning and to Mr. Marcel Iureş for his warm welcome (at the Act Theatre, the theatre that usually hosts the performances of “Flowers for Algernon”).

Where did the idea of the performance « Flowers for Algernon » come from?

It all started with a birthday present. I got the book „Flowers for Algernon” from my best friend and I just couldn’t stop reading it. I liked it so much, that I ignored the fact that there was a male character in it. So he became she. First I just picked a monolog for my student’s portfolio; then I made a longer piece- I had spent some time in a hospital because of some nodule on my vocal chords, so I was missing a second part that I needed for my graduation exam.

Then I left it aside, for a while. Till last year, when it came to my mind again. And this time I didn’t stop any more. I increased size, I worked in the depth of it, I dressed it up, I cleaned it up and I presented it. The official premiere was at the end of March, at Teatrul Act.

What do you think will be the end of this show?

I don’t know and I don’t think like that.

What’s your relationship with the National Theatre Festival? Have you performed before? How was it? When? Why?

A relationship that all actors should experience at least once: being part of it. In previous years I was present with performances of the National Theatre of Craiova, where I work. This year I will be part of the festival both with the Act Theatre and with the team of the National, part of the cast of a performance worth seeing “BreakIN”, after Răzvan Petrescu, directed by young and talented Dragoş Muşoiu.

If you were to decide on the selection of this festival, would you have chosen “Flowers for Algernon” with Iulia Colan? If I hadn’t seen the show, how would you convince me to come watch it?

With the brief and honest presentation of the Act Theatre website.

The National Theatre Festival has its 25 anniversary this year. What would you like to wish on this occasion? Would you have advice to the organizers? What is there to be improved? Please be brutally honest!

I think quality is the most important thing. But again, who decides on this? From this point of view, this world is so subjective, so beautiful and so eclectic. No one can be the supreme judge. So me neither. I cannot formulate a verdict. And I can’t call myself an advisor either.

Did you have time to go through the list of the selected performances? Would you like to see some of them? Will you have time? You, actors, do you have time to see the shows in the festival? Can you be part of the joyful audience in Bucharest?

I might go to see some of them if I will not have to perform at my theatre those days.
