The garden itself is the point of coagulation of history, it is its protagonist; and it is in the garden that one finds, precisely for this reason, the enormous difficulty of interpretation. Not showing it, assuming it, is a mistake. (…)  The garden must exist, it must be something that you can almost see and hear (I can even think of the smell, or just the smell, for fun!), But it cannot but be “a dip”. Because everything is concentrated. The garden for me is in the “foreground”.

It is through the garden that history is seen . It is a screen through which, not deformed, you can see everything else. In the most vulgar way it is a veil curtain, like a garden, which acts as a fourth wall, and is seen and not seen. But, again, this is a vulgar way to clarify a critical point. But there is even more. (…)

It is this “something more” that I cannot grasp for now. That escapes me through my fingers. Also because the difficulties, the technical puzzles are before me and paralyze me almost completely … (from Director’s comments, 1974 (Archivio Storico Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa)
