Anne tries her best to take care of André, her father, whose unreliable memory makes him increasingly vulnerable. Discouraged by his short temper, the caretakers are of no help and leave him one after another. The father’s memories gradually disintegrate. Everything is blurred around him, a confused melange where places mix with each other and loved ones mix with strangers. In the twilight of his existence, his perplexity grips him more and more into an irreversible loneliness. Deeply moving, The Father is a serious and realistic family story and an unsentimental, intensely emotional look at the world through the eyes of a man dealing with dementia, a dramatic illustration of the physical losses that come along with the mental ones.
