A wooden desk, a five-pronged candle holder and a mannequin adorning a lengthy robe (one of Doina Levintza’s creations) .This is what made up the peculiar décor of the NTF press conference earlier today, at the National Theatre in Bucharest. Alongside Marina Constantinescu, also present were Aura Corbeanu (executive director for the NTF), Ion Caramitru (director of the National Theatre) as well as representatives from various partners and supporters ( the Ministry of Culture, The Romanian Culture Institute, Baneasa Mall, “Ion Manu” Cultural Centre, Adevarul Newspaper)

The 2014 Edition of the NTF enjoys a budget of nearly 950 000 euros and will include 46 shows (amongst which 13 have been inducted in the MASTERS department) , three exhibitions (to Doina Levintza, Ion Manu and George Constantin), conferences and book launches.

A year of “firsts”

This year, the festival shall include / for the first time since its inception- a show of its very own making. A manifesto of the younger generation , “West side story” is a musical envisioned by Răzvan Mazilu, whose scores shall be played out by the National Youth Orchestra, under the supervision of Gabriel Bebeșelea.
Another premier for the festival is its breakthrough partnership with areas which were up until now highly unlikely candidates. Glossy magazines, Baneasa Mall and Tarom Airlines (which will begin to carry the festival newspaper on both domestic and international flights) are this year’s newest partners.

“Theatre can’t cope on its own. It’s up to us, the people in theatre, to ensure continuous communication with the others. It’s not true that culture has no one. It has us. It belongs to us. To the ones who forge it. To the ones who enjoy it “, Marina Constantinescu stressed.

The final show, “Rhinocerisation” (written by Eugène Ionescu, directed by Bob Wilson) can be seen on-stage , at the National Theatre in Craiova, as well as broadcast at the Epika Hall of the Baneasa Mall.
A new feature is also the festival newspaper- the NTF Journal- written in partnership with Metropolis Newspaper.

The paper will run for four editions, and will be found in all major institutions which host the event, as well as on Tarom flights. Today marks the launch of the first edition.

“I have high hopes for this edition to be the spiritual flurry before the elections”

“Donka / a letter to Chekhov” ,the foreign show within the festival, is “one of the most extraordinary treks within the world of Chekhov, crafted by a man of outstanding cultural range” ,Marina Constantinescu declared, having seen it two years earlier, at a festival in Bogota. “This visual poem is one of the most ravishing invite to search for your own self.”

Showings are programmed for the 29th and 30th of October, from 20:30 PM, at the “I. L. Caragiale” National Theatre in Bucharest.
