Virtual photography exhibition, aiming at reconstruction the past of the National Theatre Festival, from 1990 to 2004

The performances selected for the National Theatre Festival over the years are brought into the spotlight- some of them have priceless documenting value. Mihaela Marin tried to create a visual micro- universe of the National Theatre Festival, a history in images. The exhibition comprises photographs from theatre archives, from the archives of the festival photographers, of the artists, as well as from the UNITER and „Teatrul azi” magazine archives.

A poster is a visual blaze, it’s a silent voice pipe that announces, that calls for the people to participate at the celebration. The theatre poster becomes a sign that of the ephemeral spirit of the theatrical emotion. At the same time, it becomes a first point of emergence, the first interface between artists and the “civilians”, the spectators.

And if a poster for a performance suggests a state of mind, if it can direct on towards emotion and artistic intention, the festival poster has to represent a call to collective joy, enjoyment of multiple artistic acts, and therefore to sharing a phenomenon: a concave magnifier that brings one closer to the essence, to perspective, to various, peering affiliation. Speaking strictly about the NTF posters, these do represent, every year, the vision and the concept of the Romanian theatrical movement, as it was taken in, processed and finally offered to the world by each one of the 12 directors of the NTF.

This is why a collection of theatre performance posters covering 25 years can lead to a sort of contemplation of much higher level, especially in case of a presentation in a special space, a place of passage as is the University underground crossing, the ground zero of the Bucharest pedestrians, transformed into the NTF Passage for the duration of the festival.

This bringing together of  the Signs of annual theatrical synthesis is not at all an exhaustive one, since from some editions there were no preserved copies- and this gives the measure of how much we care for the institution of memory- be it collective or private memory, in fact of how careless we are with the times passing.

The exhibition „Posters in Time.  The Time of the Theatre” dedicated to the anniversary of the 25 years of the festival thus sets a necessary full stop before a restart.
