Here he gets the chance o meet the daughters of Dr. Balanzoni, Rosaura and Beatrice, while their father is away and the young women enjoy from the terrace of their home the serenade of a stranger.
The author of the serenade is Florindo, a student who rents a room in the doctor’s house and who is shily in love with Rosaura, albeit lacking the courage to share his feelings. Lelio does not miss the chance: he presents himself disguised as a rich Marquis and claims to be the author of the serenade, without saying who he actually is in love with from the two sisters. For the sake of “spiritual inventions”, an art in itself, Lelio indulges in describing himself through a series of lies -which, nevertheless, do not remain without unwanted consequences.
