“Over the course of the first three years’ research within the Multimedia Dictionary of Romanian Theatre (2020-2022), we discovered multiple artistic names that have been active in the Romanian theatre in the 1960-2000 timespan, but that have not been recorded by official history, despite the fact that their accomplishments are remarkable.”

“What are the reasons for this incomplete selection, why, of all chronicles included in the theatre critics’ volumes, is the amount of articles on shows created by women lower than the amount of articles on men’s shows, despite the fact that women directors worked intensively, some of the times for the same theatre for decades. At the same time, why are the articles following shows made by women visibly more targeted by gender prejudices, even misogyny at times, and what did this mean for the career of women directors, women playwrights, women set designers, women music composers, as well as, of course, actresses – these are some questions we sought to answer in the 4th edition of the MDRT-Feminine project. These answers are meant to rewrite a missing part of Romanian theatre’s history, and to restore a more complete perspective on the Romanian creative scene for the current generations and the generations to come.”
The Multimedia Dictionary of Romanian Theatre is a digital platform meant to offer new, specialized content, but also to store together information that is already available online about legendary artists and reference shows in Romanian theatre. The artists and shows’ profiles are put together by a complex team of over 50 people, theatre specialists that write introductory articles from a contemporary perspective, and students of theatre-themed universities, gathering all related materials.
