The (In)Dependents – homo sapiens non urinat in ventum

8 November | 18:00 and 21:00 – unteatru

Whether theater is called independent, private, alternative or underground, whether people working in this field are called artists or cultural workers, what unites all these experiences is the fact that, at their core, there are people who still decide to believe, to do, to make things work. This performance is about them.

At the initiative of the Idea77 Association, three independent spaces from Bucharest, representative of the local performance sector, very different in terms of vision and operating mode, put together people and resources to create a performance about the condition of the independent cultural worker in Romania. As a result of an intimate exploration of the stories that accompanied the genesis of these organizations, of the people behind and in front of them, and of the challenges and issues they face today, a tragic-comic, honest, occasionally irreverent performative essay: a sort of portrait of the artist in misery, who questions himself and his motivations but also the system he is forced to act in.

“I did this project because I could not be silent anymore about something that takes up a lot of mental space for me. What we have chosen to put on stage is the product of our discussions, our experiences, our combined histories, a self-reflexive project in which we explore our condition as independent artists or cultural workers, and laugh at it, and get angry, in order to not cry, to not complain, in order to do something with all the anger accumulated inside before we become jaded, or cynical, or simply fall prey to inertia.

It’s a exercise of honesty about how independence or freelancing or the status of freelance feels in the field of culture. I hope this raises questions, I hope it opens discussions.” – Catinca Drăgănescu, director

The performance is an initiative of the Idea77 Association carried out in partnership with unteatru, Replika Educational Theater Center, LUNI Theater from Green Hours.

The project is part of the Performative Microhistory platform of the independent cultural worker in Romania and represents an approach to self-representation with artistic means and performative archiving.
